On 24th, February 2017, governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was sworn as executive governor of Ondo state along with his deputy Agboola Ajayi under a joint ticket.
The Governor is expected to steer the affairs of the state and All Progressives Congress APC which he rode on to power which automatically confirmed him as leader of the party at state level.
Earlier before the inauguration, political gladiators within the party and particularly Agboola kinsmen has predicted a doom in Akeredolu’s administration.
The predictions is not for his government to fail but the choice of Agboola as his deputy, an adventure and romance they described as too dangerous for the governor to embark on.
Ironically ,the experienced suitsayer politicians are either given appointment of their choice or got it delayed for months and years, courtesy of Agboola’ manipulation which tune the governor was dancing to and enjoying.
While the governor was busy settling down for technocrats or baby politicians to its government, the deputy governor was scouting, romancing key players in the state strategic positions.
The governor took so much time engaging in frivolous politics and concentrating on financial empowerment of his family members and cronies with awards of contracts and juicy appointments in government.
Local government election was thrown into the dust bin for more than three years till when COVID-19 pandemic eroded the recent plans to conduct the poll.
He took the governor years to woke up from his slumber or bondage to realize Agboola’s systematic ambition.
Unfortunately for the governor when he decided to took a drastic action against the deputy, his enemies launches their plan B with a deadly attack on the Governor which almost consume him.
After struggling for months to survive the attack ,it was reveal and alleged that, the governor was poisoned by over ambitious politicians.
All this period was turbulent for the governor and a battle which it seems he cannot win alone without a common front with his footsoldiers.
The question is that where are the footsoldiers, who are the footsoldiers, what’s their political background and experience to confront such war that’s about to consume their boss?
When Aketi was doing away with leaders of the party in the state and equipping himself with Rockies or baby politicians, little does he know is just an empty drum in the heart of the town.
The Ondo House of Assembly which is supposed to serve and support the governor during wars like this has been infiltrated and cirmcumsized by Akeredolu’s insensitivity in the past.
Akeredolu brought to power 90% House members and since inauguration some are still struggling to find their feet in politicking and legislative duties.
The lawmakers loyal to Akeredolu have been finding it difficult to plan perfectly and harmonize an impeachment plot against the deputy governor who has been boasting to have them in his pockets either by proxy or something beyond human comprehension.
In the history of Ondo state since 1999, Akeredolu’s government acquired the worst election records as a sitting governor, losing 80% national assembly elective positions to oppositions which he pretended to be comfortable with due to its anti – party activities and gangsterism leadership.
At the last count no fewer than six governorship aspirants are jostling for Akeredolu’s position under the same political party, the All Progressives Congress. This is unconnected with internal crisis rocking the party at state level, fueled by perceived loggerheads the governor is having with some party national leadership.
Now in the course of his political struggle ,the governor has tested positive to COVID-19 ,forcing him to 14 days isolation which is few weeks to the party primary.
According to political analysts and social commentators, the deputy governor Agboola Ajayi, may not survive the battle to remain as number two citizen of Ondo state even as his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has earlier called him out publicly to resign his position.
According to reports from the governor isolation room, he’s determine and confidence that he will cross the hurdles before him and that victory await him at the October 10 governorship election in the state.
